  • University of Louisville's Clinical and Translational Research Building awarded LEED Gold Certification /

    August 12, 2010

The University of Louisville along with its architectural team of SmithGroup and Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan Inc. have  announced the acheivement of a LEED-NC Gold certification for the new Clinical and Translational Research Building.

In the quest to continue to excel in the biomedical sciences nationwide, the University's Health Sciences Center (HSC) embarked on the design of the Clinical and Translational Research building (CTR) in 2004. The facility was to be a continuation of the goals of creating state-of-the-art research facilities in order to attract and retain the best researchers from among the nation, consolidate existing programs, and provide for the opportunity to augment on the success of programs already established within the HSC.

Completed in August 2009, the $109-million, 288,000 gsf facility consists of a combination of wet laboratories, laboratory support spaces, shared equipment/support areas, auditorium, and research faculty offices.  The building's bright, colorful and vibrant interior lab and office environments were designed to facilitate discovery and groundbreaking research.  Of primary importance is the open laboratory concept utilized in the facility, which allowed lab planning experts to design laboratories as larger spaces housing various investigators rather than dedicated smaller modules assigned to a single investigator, thus increasing collaboration.

Achieving LEED Gold Certification was clearly one of the project's most significant accomplishments. While it is increasingly common for buildings to pursue LEED certification, but it is extremely rare that certification isn't actually pursued until the project is well into construction.  The design team, contractor and owner met to discuss the possibility of pursuing LEED late in the game and determined that certification would be achievable since the team incorporated various sustainable design measures from the beginning.  These measures included providing daylighting to 75% of occupied spaces, selecting eco-friendly and recyclable materials, and commissioning all equipment including fumehoods.

The Clinical and Translational Research Building project is the fourth in a series of research buildings SmithGroup has designed with partner AJRC. SmithGroup and AJRC have a long history on the University of Louisville campus in a partnership that dates back over 30 years and includes research buildings, classrooms, clinical expansion at the University of Louisville campus. In addition, the team designed the university's research tower, library center, dental school, clinical core hospital building, an ambulatory care building, and the Donald Baxter and Delia Baxter Research Buildings.

SmithGroup ranks as the 7th largest architecture and engineering firm in the U.S. (Building Design & Construction "Giants" survey, July 2009) and employs 800. The firm is composed of client industry-focused practices serving the higher education, healthcare, workplace and science & technology markets.

With 346 LEED accredited professionals and 48 LEED certified projects, SmithGroup is a national leader in sustainable, environmentally intelligent design. Among its most noteworthy, recently completed projects are the dual LEED Platinum Christman Building, a corporate headquarters in Lansing, Mich.; the LEED Platinum Smart Home at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; and the National Renewable Energy Lab's Science & Technology Facility, Golden, Colo., the first LEED Platinum federal project.

Established in 1853, SmithGroup is the longest continually operating architecture and engineering firm in the U.S.

  • National Intrepid Center of Excellence Opens /

    June 24, 2010

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), a privately-funded facility designed to treat service members with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and psychological health issues, opens today at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The new $65 million, 72,000-square-foot NICoE facility, designed by SmithGroup, will provide military patients and veterans with mild to moderate head injuries the best opportunity to regain their pre-injury abilities in a supportive, healing environment.

The Center was made possible through the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), a nonprofit organization which is donating the Center to the Department of Defense. Funded entirely by private donations, the facility will serve as a new global Center of Excellence in the specialized field of TBI, which has become the signature wound for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This facility will accommodate TBI treatment and research programs that are available nowhere else in the world," says Phil Tobey, senior vice president at SmithGroup. "Every element of the building's design is acutely attuned to the multiple physical, sensory and wayfinding needs of TBI patients."

The Center is distinguished by the number of programs co-located under one roof, enabling a more comprehensive care approach. In order to more precisely diagnose complex brain injuries, the building houses the most advanced imaging technologies, including a 3 Tesla MRI; 64-Slice PET/CT scanner; an Elekta Neuromag® MEG (magnetoencephalography) scanner?one of only nine in clinical use in the U.S.; and Functional Transcranial Doppler Spectroscopy (fTCDS).

The Center also houses an array of physical, occupational and recreational therapy spaces, with a large, open plan treatment room that features advanced training equipment to promote strength, balance, agility and aerobic conditioning.  A variety of comprehensive support spaces will help patients and their families maximize their potential for recovery, and enable patients and family members to have a place to relax between treatments as well as provide emotional and spiritual support to one another.

The facility is targeting Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.

SmithGroup also designed the Center for the Intrepid, an advanced rehabilitation and research center for amputee and burn patients in San Antonio, Texas, as well as dozens of other Department of Defense and Veterans healthcare facilities. June 18, 2010

SmithGroup, one of the country's leading architecture and engineering firms, has been selected to provide full-service interior design and engineering services for the newly renovated building at 425 Eye Street, NW, in Washington, DC.

The General Services Administration recently signed a lease to take 285,000 square feet at the building on behalf of the Veterans Administration (VA).  By June 2011, the VA will move nearly 1,000 employees into this "swing space" as its current home at the Lafayette Building undergoes a five year renovation.  Cassidy Turley represented building owner Paramount Group in securing the 10-year lease.

SmithGroup recently completed a $20 million repositioning of the 425 Eye Street Building, a 1970s-era building, bringing it up to Class A standards.

Renovations to 425 Eye Street include a new lobby, new restrooms, and a new glass and precast concrete façade. Paramount Group anticipated the growing tenant demand for eco-friendly facilities by investing in premium quality sustainable materials and systems and selecting SmithGroup's highly experienced team to execute its vision.

The building location affords immediate access to both downtown and Capitol Hill with multiple major arteries such as New York Avenue and 395, major bus routes, the Circulator and Metro just steps from the front door. Located in the heart of Mount Vernon Triangle, the unique contemporary design and first-class amenities of 425 Eye Street add to the vitality of this emerging neighborhood.

  • Suzanne Napier promoted to head San Francisco Research and Learning Studio /

    May 13, 2010

SmithGroup (www.smithgroup.com), one of the nation's leading architecture, engineering, interiors, and planning firms, has promoted  Suzanne Napier, AIA, LEED AP, to lead the firm's research & learning studio in San Francisco.

A 22-year SmithGroup veteran, Napier succeeds William Diefenbach, FAIA, LEED AP, as head of the research & learning studio. Diefenbach was recently named director of SmithGroup's San Francisco and Los Angeles practices. Napier's promotion is an aspect of realignment by SmithGroup of top intellectual resources and management talent to focus on core national practices. Last month, James Hannon, who was previously director of the firm's San Francisco and Los Angeles practices, shifted to a full time focus as head of the firm's national health practice.

Napier has worked in every practice in the San Francisco office, but has served the majority of her career as an architect and planner in SmithGroup's research & learning studio. A highlight of her career is her successful management and completion of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Molecular Foundry; a state-of-the-art, $52 million project with 96,500 square feet of laboratory and research space located in the Berkeley hills. The Molecular Foundry is a LEED Gold-Certified center for interdisciplinary research in the nanosciences. The structure is recognized internationally for its bold and forward-looking design.

Currently, Napier is project manager for a number of key Northern California projects in various stages of completion in energy research, engineering, lifesciences, and veteran's healthcare. The studio's portfolio also includes numerous architectural projects for colleges, universities as well as for courthouses.

As she takes charge of the 24-person research & learning Studio, Napier says her focus will be on continuing the studio's integration of high design quality, sustainability and flexible functionality for client projects.

"The academic setting continues to change with research, learning and health environments becoming more integrated and collaborative," Napier said. "Our task is to create facilities that anticipate and accommodate these trends and our capable and experienced staff is up to that challenge." She adds that it is a goal to have the entire research & learning staff become LEED accredited professionals.

As Napier's direct supervisor of more than two decades in research & learning, Bill Diefenbach commented on her experience and capabilities saying: "Suzanne has the perfect balance of design, technical and management skills. I've relied on her to drive many projects that she delivered on time and on budget, and which later earned national awards. I'm confident she will lead the studio with great enthusiasm and success."

SmithGroup, which posted 2009 gross revenue of $166.3 million, is the oldest continually operating architecture and engineering firm in the U.S., originally founded in 1853. The 800-employee firm operates 11 offices across the U.S. A national leader in sustainable, design, SmithGroup currently employs 346 LEED accredited professionals and has 45 LEED certified projects, including five with the highest "Platinum" status.

SmithGroup's California practice specializes in the design and creation of fully-integrated healthcare facilities, including hospitals and medical clinics; assisted living facilities; lifescience buildings, laboratories and research centers in both the private and public sectors; courthouses; college and university facilities; and workplace environments.

SmithGroup's San Francisco office occupies 36,000-square-feet of space at the Bently Reserve, a landmark San Francisco building in the city's financial district that was the original home of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. To showcase its own capabilities in the design and construction of sustainable workspaces, SmithGroup in 2007 transformed its offices into one of the most progressive high-performance professional workspaces in the nation. The Bently Reserve building was certified LEED CL Gold in 2008 and is a premier work environment nationally.

  • SmithGroup Names William Diefenbach Office Director in San Francisco /

    April 28, 2010

James Hannon to Focus Full-Time on Firm's National Health Practice

SmithGroup (www.smithgroup.com), one of the nation's leading architecture, engineering, interiors, and planning firms has named William Diefenbach office director of its San Francisco and Los Angeles practices. Diefenbach succeeds James Hannon, who will focus solely on the firm's national health practice. Hannon led the 160-person California practice for the past six years.

The moves continue the firm's alignment of top intellectual resources and management staff to focus on core national practices, and reaffirms the firm's long-standing presence in California, said Carl Roehling, SmithGroup president and CEO.

"This transition will be of great benefit to our organization, allowing Jim to fully concentrate his time on leading and growing our health practice," Roehling said. "Bill's success both as an architect and as a studio leader ensures clients and our staff of our commitment to continued leadership excellence." Diefenbach will leave his longtime post as San Francisco's research & learning studio leader, with a successor to be named soon.

Diefenbach - who is nationally recognized for his expertise in research laboratory planning and design - is only the 10th office director in the 82-year history of the firm's California practice. During his tenure as head of SmithGroup's highly successful research & learning studio, Diefenbach influenced design and managed projects ranging from the award-winning Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Molecular Foundry to the California Institute of Technology's Broad Center for the Biological Sciences.

He is currently serving as principal-in-charge on a number of projects including two for the University of California San Francisco—the Institute for Regeneration Medicine and the Cardiovascular Research Building. Both buildings are under construction and are expected to be completed later this year. The studio's portfolio includes numerous architectural projects for universities and state courthouses.

Hannon, a 30-year veteran of the firm's San Francisco practice, was named Office Director of SmithGroup's California offices in 2004.  An expert master planner, Hannon has focused his entire career planning healthcare facilities and campuses.

"The expertise of our team is widely viewed as among the nation's best and that is testament to Jim's successful leadership," Diefenbach said. "Our diversity in terms of business categories is strength of our firm and I intend to maintain that diversity as we move toward augmenting our national practices."

Among Hannon's achievements as head of the SmithGroup health practice are management of long-term consulting assignments for eight Kaiser Permanente campuses and leading major projects for healthcare giants such as the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University and Sutter Health's California Pacific Medical Center, as well as many projects for the U.S. Veterans Affairs System.

"This is an important time for SmithGroup and for the country in the light of healthcare reform," Hannon said. "Reform will impact every aspect of healthcare, including facilities. Our ability to stay at the forefront of new strategies for operational efficiency in care delivery such as continuing shifts to increased outpatient care, as well as links between other major policy trends and facility organization needs will ensure our continued success in this important business segment."

Both Diefenbach and Hannon are members of the SmithGroup Board of Directors and will retain those responsibilities. Hannon is also a member of the firm's Executive Committee.
